A United Opposition convoy was on Thursday, November 5, reportedly attacked by unknown individuals during a campaign rally in Migori County.
Images obtained on Thursday, November 5, show the windows of several of their cars damaged by what appeared to be stones.
The opposition leaders, who are touring the Nyanza region as part of their campaign trail, included Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi and Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa. They were in Migori when the reported attack occurred.
Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi took to social media to condemn the act and send a message to the perpetrators, vowing not to be silenced or shaken.
Muturi took a swipe at a section of the broad-based leaders, especially those allied to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), accusing them of sponsoring goons to disrupt their event.
"The attack on us in Migori Town by goons sent by broad-based politicians is a blatant act of political intolerance and an assault on our democratic freedoms," Muturi stated.
During the attack, Kalonzo pointed fingers at the police, accusing them of being in cohorts with goons to disrupt the opposition meeting in Nyanza.
"It is very shameful. The plot here is for the police to throw tear gas, then, with the commotion, the goons now join in pelting stones. Very disgraceful," Kalonzo stated.
Despite the incident, Kalonzo maintained that the opposition leaders would proceed with their planned campaign rallies across the Nyanza region, saying the reported violence would not deter them from meeting their supporters.
"No amount of intimidation will keep us from our people. Freedom cannot be stopped. We will continue with our rally in Homa Bay as we had planned," he added.
Before the incident, Kalonzo and his allies had addressed hundreds of supporters at a rally in Migori, which remained largely peaceful until clashes involving goons broke out.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, declared a nationwide crackdown on political goons, criminal gangs, and financiers, warning senior police officers that they would face consequences for failing to prevent election-related violence.
